Hardware Review: Budget Fluorescent Lights from Alzo Digital Video Review

When the Film Sensei promises something, he delivers! Well…most of the time. Here is my video review of the Alzo Quad Pan-L Fluorescent Light bank. I had a longer text review of this fantastic budget fluorescent light bank for indie filmmakers last week, and this is my follow-up. Check out the earlier review for a more detailed look at these lights. I was impressed enough with the units at a recent music video shoot that I ran home and ordered one to test out for myself. I am definitely in love!

If you’re an indie or guerrilla filmmaker looking to add the power of fluorescent lighting to your low budget lighting kit then you’ll want to check out the Alzo Quad Pan-L lights. Great units at a great, under $400 price.

   Great info, I am planning to buy these, or the similar product from CL-455 from Coollights. If you or anyone has any opinion about which would be better (or perhaps an alternative provider?)
   I will mainly use the lights for indoor interviews.

   Thanks for the post! I haven’t worked with or seen the Coollights in person before, so I’m not really able to comment on them (I would love a chance to see them, tho, if anyone in the area has a set I can check out). I do see that they don’t come with diffusion screen, eggcrate/honeycomb add-ons, or a mounting bracket/adapter. What that means is they end up being a bit more expensive than the Alzo version. They also tend to be “out of stock” a lot — I’ve been thinking about picking up a unit for them for a while now and can never seem to find a time when they are available for purchase.

   All that being said, the Cool Lights guys have a great reputation (much like the Alzo guys) and frequent various filmmaking forums. They’re very customer service oriented. Really, you probably can’t go wrong with either brand, but you’ll save around $40 or more with the Alzos. As a cheap bastard myself, I tend to go for the money savings if the models are similar.
